Michigan City Passes Local Carbon Monoxide Ordinance
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017 Michigan City, Indiana approved a local carbon monoxide ordinance by vote of 9 to 0. Once the Mayor Ron Meer signs it, the ordinance will need to be approved by the Fire Prevention & Building Safety Commission during their scheduled meeting on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. in Indianapolis. More meeting information here. Meeting location: Indiana Government Center South Conference Room B 302 W. Washington Street Indianapolis, IN
The ordinance is identical to the one LaPorte passed and the state approved in May of this year. It addresses only new residential construction. For residents who live in older/existing homes who do not have a CO alarm and cannot afford one, the LOK Wishing Tree Foundation is able to provide a limited number of free CO alarms with the support of First Alert and a grant from the Unity Foundation of LaPorte County.
Further, we have partnered with Michigan City Fire departments to host CO awareness events and cooperating with them to provide alarms that they install for residents.
